Huang and Otsuka’s The Foolish Bird is more than an expression of foolishness of Chinese youth. It is an expression of anger. It is an expression of anger. With its slow pacing, the figure of anger builds up, slowly constructing a singular image of the disenfranchised women of China, effaced, silenced, and under erasure by the patriarchy that discombobulate her.

For The Foolish Bird – premiered at the Generation 14+ section of the Berlinale where it garnered a Special Jury Mention – Huang returns to her native Hunan province with some of the winning team from her acclaimed debut feature, Egg and Stone (2012): a local non-professional cast, and her husband, cinematographer and producer Ryuji Otsuka (now sharing credit as a co-director).

The film’s title refers to a Chinese proverb 笨鳥先飛,  which literally means the stupid bird’s fly first, and is traditionally used to mean that those with less ability need to start first. For this film, however, the director commented that she wanted to focus on how foolish decisions at that age can often lead to tragedy at that age.

This folk-tale entitled “the foolish bird” is gathered from oral sources sources, tracing its origin to ancient Ceylon (Sri Lanka). These tales are often found to contain similarities from stories from Buddhism and Hinduism. This is the story nr. 180 from the collection “stories of the cultivating caste”.

In THE FOOLISH BIRD, 16-year-old Lynn shields her face with a dense cave of hair, the long black locks of J-horror and adolescent hiding places. Lynn is one of China’s many “left-behind” children, living with grandparents and cousins in an emptied-out small town while her mother hustles in an economic stream far away.
