Villon's Wife is based on the 1947 semi-autographical short work of the same name by Osamu Dazai. The film premiered at the Montreal World Film Festival in September 2009, in New York in July 2010 and had its UK premiere in December 2010.

"Villon's Wife" depicts the life of a novelist and his wife, who sticks with him despite his debts, alcoholism and affairs with other women. Notes. Based on Osamu Dazai's novel ‘‘Villon no Tsuma’’ which was inspired by 15th century French poet Francois Villon.

Based upon the short story of Osamu Dazai's, Villon's Wife is as the title stated, an examination of that feminine character and her trials and tribulations during a period of grave uncertainty, brought to life by the excellent art direction and production sets that transported us back when American GIs first set foot on Japan.

“Villon’s Wife,” set in the dark years of the early postwar era, is narrated by the wife of a writer who has been much celebrated but who has given himself over to drunkenness and debauchery.
